Born in Nigeria on June 11, 1958, Bassey graduated in architecture from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, in 1981. He then worked for about a decade as a public-sector architect, including at the University of Benin's Physical Planning Division from 1982 to 1991. He was also active in Nigerian human-rights advocacy and served on the board of the Civil Liberties Organisation.

Bassey co-founded Environmental Rights Action/Friends of the Earth Nigeria in 1993 and subsequently served as its Executive Director.
